Why Your Business Website Isn't Showing on Google (and How to Fix It)

Built a website but customers can't find it on Google? These are the most common reasons and the practical steps Kenyan businesses can take to fix them.

You have a website, but when you search for your business or your services on Google, it is nowhere to be found. This is one of the most common problems we hear from businesses. The good news is that the causes are usually fixable.

1. Google doesn't know your website exists yet

New websites can take days or weeks to appear. You can speed this up by:

  1. Adding your website to Google Search Console (it's free).
  2. Submitting your sitemap, the file that lists all your pages.
  3. Requesting indexing for your most important pages.

Search Console also shows you errors that stop Google from reading your site.

2. Your pages don't match what customers search for

If your home page says "Welcome to our website" but customers search for "CCTV installation in Nairobi", Google has no reason to show you. Each important service should have its own page that clearly says:

  • What the service is
  • Where you offer it (your town or county)
  • Who it's for, and why to choose you

Use the same words your customers use, in your page titles, headings and text.

3. You don't have a Google Business Profile

For local searches such as "IT company near me", Google shows the map results first. A complete, verified Google Business Profile with your correct phone number, location, opening hours, photos and reviews is often the fastest way to start getting calls.

4. Your website is slow or hard to use on a phone

Most people in Kenya browse on their phones. If your site takes too long to load or is hard to read on a small screen, visitors leave and Google notices. Compress large images, avoid heavy sliders and make sure buttons are easy to tap.

5. There is too little useful content

Pages with only a few lines of text give Google very little to work with. Helpful content builds trust with both customers and search engines:

  • Detailed service pages
  • Frequently asked questions
  • Regular blog articles that answer real customer questions

Tip: One helpful article per week adds up to more than 50 pages a year that can each bring visitors from Google.

6. No other websites mention you

Google trusts websites that other reputable websites link to. Ask partners, suppliers and industry associations to link to you, list your business in reputable directories, and share your articles on social media.

7. Technical problems are blocking Google

Sometimes a website accidentally tells Google not to index it, or has broken links and missing page titles. A quick technical check can catch these issues.

The bottom line

Ranking on Google is not a one-time task. It is the result of a well-built website, clear service pages, a strong Google Business Profile and consistent helpful content.
