16-camera CCTV system for a two-storey supermarket

The challenge

The supermarket had an old analogue system with blurry footage, several dead cameras and no way to check the store remotely. Stock losses at the tills and the back store were rising, and the owners could not review incidents quickly.

They needed:

• Clear footage of every entrance, till and stock area
• At least four weeks of recording
• Live viewing for the owner and two branch managers on their phones
• A system that keeps recording during power cuts

What we did

After a free site survey, we designed a 16-camera layout that covered every critical area with as few cameras as possible.

1. Cameras: 4MP IP bullet cameras for the entrances, parking and loading bay, and dome cameras over the tills and aisles, all with night vision.
2. Recording: a 16-channel NVR with enough storage for 30 days of continuous recording.
3. Cabling: Cat6 cabling in concealed trunking, neatly labelled at the network cabinet.
4. Power: a UPS that keeps the cameras and recorder running through blackouts.
5. Remote access: the mobile app set up on three phones, with motion alerts for the back store after closing time.

The installation was done over two nights to avoid disrupting trading hours.

The result

• The owners can now see all 16 cameras live from their phones, wherever they are.
• Incidents at the tills can be found and exported in minutes using motion search.
• The system keeps recording during power outages.
• The staff on duty were trained to check cameras and export clips.
